ONU...My True North

So here I am, sitting at my desk thinking of what my first blog post ever should be about. Sports? No, it’s too early in the blogging relationship to just jump into that. About myself? No, you can read the little bio to the right to get the basics. Politics? Give me a break! Who wants to read another post about politics? Let’s be real.

After ten minutes or so of intense thinking it hit me; why am I even blogging in the first place? The simple answer is that it’s a requirement for my social media class, and that I must blog in order to graduate. But the real answer is much deeper than that. I’m blogging because I discovered my True North.

Some people may be wondering what “True North” means. Well, the simple answer is that it’s one of our tag lines for the university, and once again the real answer is much deeper than that. To me True North means an awesome future. One that is full of success, good experience, a little struggle here and there, but an overall happy and well-lived life.

I chose ONU because of the feeling I got when I first stepped foot on campus years ago. It was a feeling of belonging; like I was supposed to become a polar bear. Everything about my first time on campus was what you want out of a quality college visit. Nice weather, beautiful campus, friendly people, but most importantly that feeling of belonging. I visited other campuses, and yes they were nice, but nothing like Northern. And I chose ONU.

I came into freshman year with a plan. I was going to major in civil engineering and work my butt off to play varsity baseball. Sounds pretty simple, right? Wrong. Sometimes life throws you curveballs and you have to learn to hit what’s pitched to you. My plan at the time wasn’t my true self because I hadn’t discovered my true self yet.

After a bunch of details that I won’t bore you with, I did a complete 180 degree turn with my life. That 180 is why I’m blogging. Coming to ONU has led me to discover my True North; my true self. ONU has allowed me to find out who I really am and who I’m going to be in the future. I went from a baseball hopeful with engineering dreams to a club volleyball player who is going to be a public relations practitioner.

Four years ago if someone would have told me I would be where I am today; I wouldn’t believe them for a second. But yet here I am blogging away. This is all possible because I chose ONU. I discovered my True North, and I have to say…I’m very happy with that.
