ONU and My Family

My family is very important to me. They have been by my side through thick and thin, and have loved me every step of the way. Now, I’m not saying we’re perfect and everything is all sunshine and rainbows because it’s not. There was a time in my life where I didn’t get along with my family very much. I was letting stupid choices ruin my family relationships and that’s not something that makes me proud. I regret it every day, but I feel like I have learned from it and I’m extremely close with my family now. I love the crazy bunch.

That’s why I’m super excited that the family is coming down to good old Ada tomorrow, September 15, for ONU Family Day! ONU Family Day is an annual event in which families of ONU students are encourage to come to campus and enjoy a day full of entertainment. There are multiple sporting events going on such as men’s soccer against Transylvania and the ONU VeteransAppreciation Day game against Heidelberg.

Honestly, other than the sporting events, I’m not exactly sure what other entertainment is available to families but I’m sure food is involved somewhere; it always is on these days.

ONU Family Day has been a part of my personal college tradition because my family has come every year. We meet up in the morning and head to the football game and cheer on the Polar Bears. Then we go out to eat somewhere of my choosing (it’s always nice to have a good meal paid for by the parents). After that, we visit some of my friends who know my family and hang out for a little bit as my family and friends catch up. Before you know it it’s time to say goodbye and we part ways.

Sounds like a pretty plain and simple day, right? Well that’s exactly right because that’s how my family operates. We have a basic plan with nothing too extravagant and we enjoy our time together. What makes the day so special for me is just spending time with them and how we spend our time. My family is goofy and dysfunctional when we get together because we like to have a good time when we are all together, and that’s the way we do things. And believe me, when the WHOLE family gets together (like aunts, uncles and cousins) it’s something that you simply have to experience.

ONU Family Day has made my time here at Northern be very special on those days. It gives me and my family an opportunity to have a great time and experience Northern, my second home, together.

Much love,

 Jake

  1. I love your family Jake! They are a wonderful group of people that love unconditionally. I feel the same way about Family Day and loved having my family visit as well. I honestly believe that family is the most important thing, especially as we get older.

I have noticed one thing however. As I have gotten older, Family Day becomes more, and more special to me. I look forward to it and can't wait to see my family. Don't get me wrong, I've always loved having my family come visit. This year though, it was different. Maybe because it was my senior year. Have you noticed this yourself, or am I just crazy?

Send some love home to your family for me :)

    1. I agree that this year was a little different. For me, I think it was because I had to work soccer and then my family didn't get here until later. And the fact I'm a senior.
