Bridge that Gap!

PRSSA National Conference is coming up soon! By soon, I mean October 12-16, and I’m getting super excited because I love PR. An FYI, PRSSA stands for Public Relations Student Society of America. It’s an organization of more than 10,000 students from all over the country. There are over 300 chapters nationwide and National Conference is the time of year when those 10,000 students have the opportunity to grow as professionals.

I mentioned that I’m pretty stoked about conference and here’s why.

1. Hundreds of PR nerds like me are going to be there.

Who doesn’t like being around people who are similar to you and enjoy the same things? I know for a fact that I’m not the only person who says “it’s a PR thing” when I’m talking with my non-PR friends.  I also love networking and meeting new people and this is prime time for networking. Students from across the nation are going to be representing their chapters.

2. It’s a great time to grow professionally.

Throughout the week there are going to be sessions to attend with opportunities to learn. Some sessions are run by student chapters and some are run by established professionals. All of them are filled with information that can be useful. We are there to learn how to become PR superstars.

3. My chapter is running one of the sessions!

My chapter gets the honor of presenting a chapter development session. We get the opportunity to share our experiences and give some insight to other students. I’m going to go into greater detail about this in a later blog post.

4. The theme this year is “Bridging the Gap.”

This is pretty clever if you ask me. One, San Francisco is known for the Golden Gate Bridge, and two, conference is a place to make connections. This goes back to networking. Meeting professionals and other students is one way to “bridge the gap” between the current college setting and the future professional setting.

5. Last, but certainly not least, it’s going to be in San Francisco.

I’ve never been to the west coast and I’m pumped that I get to head that way. I’m getting out of Podunk little Ada and going to The City by the Bay. Grant it I’m going there for professional reasons but there will be some down time for me to check out the sights and paint the town.

Conference is a month away and I cannot wait. It’s a great time to grow, learn and meet some awesome people. If you’re involved in your school’s PRSSA chapter and are on the fence about going I HIGHLY encourage you to go. Maybe not this year, but at some point try to make it to National Conference. Believe me, you won’t regret it.

National Conference…It’s a PR thing,

Jake

  1. I'm also really excited about this conference. I have never been to a PRSSA conference before. I've gone to conferences for SPC (they're called NACA) and those were always a lot of fun, so I'm sure this will be fun too!

Also, I agree that the theme is quite clever. I did not know that was their theme. It's quite fitting. The part i'm most excited about though is traveling (just being honest). However, the chance to meet and talk with professionals in the field and see their views on things, it's going to be quite the experience!
